San Pedro Springs Park
San Pedro Springs Park is a beautiful and historic park that features one of the oldest springs in the county of San Antonio, Texas. The water from the spring was discovered by an expedition led by Padre Juan de Salas, who named it "el manantial" or "the fountain." It's been a gathering place for people since its discovery, but now you can also enjoy playing games, fishing, picnicking, and more at this hidden gem!
History of the San Pedro Springs Park
San Pedro Springs Park was originally a sacred place for the Coahuiltecan Indians, who lived in central Texas at the time of European exploration. The park is named after the San Pedro y San Pablo Asistencia (which provided religious services), founded by Spanish Franciscans around 1755. The spring that flows from under a stately live oak is the source of water for the San Antonio River.
In 1805, Spanish soldiers camped near the springs while awaiting orders to march north and fight the French in what would become known as the Gutierrez-Magee Expedition. In 1809, José Antonio Navarro purchased this land from the Indians and later deeded it to the City of San Antonio.
In 1852, the city commissioned German immigrant Adolphus Heiman to build a bandstand and pavilion at the springs. The following year, noted landscape architect Alfred Giles was hired to design formal gardens around the pavilion. A fish hatchery was also established in 1853, making San Pedro Springs Park one of the first public parks in Texas.
In 1873, a baseball diamond was added and soon became the home field of the San Antonio Stars, one of the earliest professional teams in Texas. In 1895, John Philip Sousa and his band gave a concert at the park to raise money for victims of a fire.
What to do at the park?
Today, San Pedro Springs Park is a popular spot for fishing, picnicking, and playing games. There's also a playground for the kids and a pavilion that can be rented for special events. The park is open from dawn to dusk, so come on out and enjoy some time in history!

Fishing
The San Pedro Springs Park Pond is a great place to catch catfish, bass, and other kinds of fish. A valid Texas fishing license is required for anyone 16 years or older.
