A short history of the San Antonio Botanical Garden

The San Antonio Botanical Garden is 25 miles north of downtown San Antonio. It contains 35 acres, with an additional 80 acres in its outer garden areas. The grounds are filled with over 13000 different plant species from all around the world! This location opened to the public in 1980 and was created by a group called “Friends of the Flowers.” The garden was originally called the “Lackland Garden Center,” and it served as a training ground for Air Force recruits. Today, there is an admission fee to enter the Botanical Gardens, but there are also many free events that take place here throughout the year.

Some of the famous areas in the gardens are the rose garden, the Japanese tea garden, and the cactus garden.

Visitors also enjoy the “Children’s Vegetable Garden” where kids can learn about gardening and growing their food. There are also many nature walks and trails to explore, as well as a bunch of different ponds with fish and turtles. If you have children, this place is a must-see!
